...6 weeks of messing!

....as in getting covered on starch, glue, varnish and Avalon! and I still haven't cracked it!...I'm still in awe as to how when I go to exhibitions I see such wonderful textile sculptures that look effortlessly made and hold their shape obediently....yet mine seem to look clumsy, begin to squash and then eventually...'nuff said!

I have managed to produce a couple of cairns but I have't achieved what I set out to do yet...so it's still a working progress...I just thought I'd share and maybe get some feedback on what you all think...

As you can see I've had to use a cheeky metal rod to keep them from toppling over, It doesn't have to there but I actually don't mind the man-made support!

I'm determined to make thread and cloth pebbles....I've been researching and experimenting but as yet nothing is holding its shape so they can't join the cairns yet!

I can't believe that I have been faffing about, on & off for almost 6 weeks...trying different techniques and to be honest they look worse now than they did at the beginning!

...I'll preserver and you never know, the penny might just drop...I've revisted  looking at artists such as Do Ho Suh, I saw his work at the Frieze a few years ago and was blown away by it...

...and I also found this artist who uses paper and  string called
nithikul nimkulrat the work reminds me of Juan Plensa but using softer more pliable materials, less harsh...
I have tried to photograph the cairns in their glass domes...but I need some more blackout material...anyway you get the general idea and when I'm happy with everything I'll photograph them properly....but for now...

anyway, its late, I just thought I'd show you what I've been doing....as promised!

sunday samples!

...Sunday samples to go alongside yesterdays post...

I've started gathering bits & bobs to go inside a selection of pebbles....while still trying to figure out how to make them stay on top of each other without making them permanently fixed together ...

back again next week, bye

....holding true to form!....

...holding true to form...Ha!... easier said than done!...so the battle of the cairn continues & I will not be beaten!

...as I mentioned before I have looked previously at building cairns, inspired by many artists work I wanted to try and  emulate some of these techniques yet make my work original....Bourgious made powerful sculptures and installations but used materials that were personal and full of emotion, that's the ingeniousness of cloth...

...and the many different types of mixed media that is now available and acceptable in today's art world.
...One of my most personal pieces I have ever made was my "Cairn" AKA "Tower of strength" (see previous blog "Ta dah" 12th June 2012 for in-depth info about it)

...and as I said last week, I find myself looking at cairns again!...possibly on a smaller scale...but I have to confess I would still like to make a core 10 metal version....Juan Plensa esk...but using the beautiful marks, like I always do...who knows...maybe one day!
Juan Plensa
...any way I digress!...so I've been happily playing about in my studio making small replica pebbles in the hope of re-creating cairns...

I've made a few machine embroidery ones, still my favourite so far...tho' I've been looking into starches etc to use rather than types of glue. Something that wont erode, damage or alter the material too much. I've also been messing with metal these last few days, my finger ends wreck but I'm starting to get the hand of it a bit now....

I've tried air drying clay and they were a bit of a disaster really and also way too solid a structure.

The challenge is to try and get the construction as delicate as I can. It's like I've stripped away the stone and left only the intricate map like marks, the empty space resembling the missing mass...the composition at the same time making it appear wholesome, the materials managing to hold and keep its form.. the fact that the shapes are all formed around true pebbles hopefully giving true and natural contours and a realistic silhouette.
The definition, significance and relevance of a cairn
as stated on the internet is...

cairns  plural of cairn (Noun)

Noun
  1. A mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, typically on a hilltop or skyline.
  2. A prehistoric burial mound made of stones.

Coastal cairns are sometimes called "Sea marks" and are often  painted white or even lit to form a beacon.... which made me think that as my pebbles are predominantly coastal I might try and all white cairn...anyway, I've reduced the amount of glue I've been applying and the map cairns seem to be getting better.

I've even had a go at knitting with the wire ....interesting!  I thought it might create a more defined structure.. .it's actually quite heavy for a small pebble! however, I do like the idea of trapping different wire and things inside, it reminds me how we sometimes find fossils inside  the pebbles...an element of surprise! obviously not inside all the pebbles, that would be too obvious!

I'm trying to rust some metal at the moment too...could prove interesting!

.... on the go at the moment are text and thread samples, and various other attempts that are drying and I've just started a string one as I'm always taking photos of rope and bringing home remnants of fishing twine, so on a smaller version...string it is!

While I'm on holiday...working term time only does have its bonuses!...I am making the most of it.
'Til next time...take care

How to emphasise fragility...successfully!

I've been pondering over some ideas and thought I'd re-visit something I briefly touched on at uni... trying to make some really delicate mixed media pebble sculptures.

I want to be able to highlight the map like marks I love so much, but in a more 3d format....I made some at uni by wrapping threads around pebbles...but, & it may sound odd...after putting them on display 3 disappeared...I honestly think they got caught in a draft and simply fluttered off somewhere!...they were soo light and delicate, but it got me thinking...

...so 15 months later I am having another go. I've got 3 glass cloche/domes that I want to house them in and so I've been experimenting...

I know I want them to resemble cairns!....& I would also like them to be free standing, I like the idea of people arranging them themselves...however as dust is an issue, having them enclosed behind glass keeps them protected and dust free....win win!

Experiment 1: maps!
....using remnants of used maps, I shredded thin strips and wrapping them around pebbles created a prototype!...'tad too much glue, but hopefully sturdy enough, I also like the fact that I could mold the strips to show contours etc.

Experiment 2: Thread!
...like previous attempts I wrapped different surplus threads around a selection of pebbles,  they have to be thick enough to hold their form but thin enough to see through and create an impression of fragility.....obviously I will use colours matched to pebbles for the real thing!

Experiment 3:
....Machine embroidery...trapping lace and chiffon I traced real pebble marks similar to my laser cut images, and sewed away..Ipod on shuffle and a cup of tea nearby...then molded it to a pebble....

....I'm liking the randomness of the different materials...
...which gives me more scope for experimenting!...I recently came across some work I liked by an artist called Rickie Wolfe  who seems to use all mediums successfully....

...but it has also helped me realise how I  have to be far more meticulous and particular to get the result I am looking for...

...with practice I'm starting to fathom out how to create delicate, yet fairly solid shapes... I'm preferring the machine embroidery ones especially the contrast alongside the maps. Trapping vintage laces and chiffons adds extra dimensions and depth....I feel there may be a sou wester one just because I can!
however...
...I also need to figure out how I can get the cairns to stay upright for longer than half an hour!
...so, tomorrow I'll be mainly re-creating mixed media cairns...in various forms...I'm still hoping to find someone who can help me re-create one using porcelain slip...what goes around comes around!...

I'm pleased to say Zillah Bell Art Gallery, Thirsk, have still got a selection of my work on display for the rest of the summer and I also dropped off some work at  Bils & Rye Art Gallery , Nunnington, which is expanding every time we visit!...I'm hoping to go over to PASH sometime next week too....so what with lovely weather, fun in the studio and places to go....what more could I ask for!?

anyway...time for food for the family...and if I manage to produce any successful pebbles, I'll post them later in the week...

Hope you're all having a good weekend....take care and back again soon...bye
